Orchestra and Vocal
Distance Nowhere (2003) | 8' Grade V
For SATB chamber choir, this work features three settings of poems by author Langston Hughes. Generally comprised of free and close harmony, the work rests well between traditional jazz and linear modal harmony in a prevailing homophonic texture.
Light Through Budding Trees - Band and Mixed Chorus (2009) | 5' Grade IV
Commissioned by Lyvie Beyrent and the Gilford High School Band and Chorus, based on a poem by Stephanie Alfred-Smith. The work was written in memory of a student who was killed in a car accident the year before he was to graduate from high school. Much of the class of 2009 gifted works of art and commemorative additions to the school for this occasion, and the work was premiered at the commencement ceremonies at Gilford High School in June, 2009.
Simple Gift (2008) | 5' Grade III
Commissioned by the Upper Valley Music Center Suzuki and Community Orchestras. When I worked as the interim conductor of orchestras, I was asked to complete a work that could include all member ensembles in a single performance. The work is comprised of a traditional chamber orchestra (2222-2221+perc+strings) with a Suzuki Violin/Cello part that can be transposed for any instrument, as well a tutti Children's Chorus melodic voice. The work is a set of free variations in an organ prelude style of the traditional Shaker melody "Simple Gift."
Three Songs for Mezzo-Soprano and Guitar (2011) | 7'
These songs were initially sketched as light music for a vocalist friend and I to perform in graduate school, however the songs were not completed until many years later when the first Alumni Composers Concert was programmed at my alma mater, the University of New Hampshire. I was asked by my colleagues to submit these songs to the program, where two of them received their premiere in 2011 by Lauren Kaiser, mezzo-soprano, and Ben Levergood, guitar.
